Washing with the Word

James 1:21-25 NKJV
Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does.
You don’t have to search very hard in the Bible to find that the Word of God is meant to transform us. It is not just nice words and stories to read. If applied to our lives, it has the power to dramatically change us from death to life, from darkness to light.
The Bible tells us in Ephesians, that before we knew God, we were spiritually dead in our transgressions and sins. We lived in darkness but then God made us children of light. From that starting point, the Word of God can help us leave our old life behind and walk and grow in the new life we have in God. But just like having a bar of soap does not make us clean, we have to apply it and remove the filth. The same concept applies here. We must read and apply God’s word daily. We cannot shower in the Word of God enough. We must scrub away the old and walk in the new because we are a new creation.
