What Does It Pay?

What Does It Pay?
by: Pastor David Wood
Romans 6:21-23 NIV
What benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of? Those things result in death! But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.
In 1979, Bob Dylan put out a Christian album. On that album was a song with the title, “Gotta Serve Somebody.” In the lyrics it said, “It may be the devil or it may be the Lord but you’re gonna have to serve somebody.” The message was clear. No matter who you are, you either serve the devil or you serve the Lord.

In these verses, we see that we have been set free from sin and now are slaves to God. But the pay is so much better. One pays death as a wage and one is a free gift with perks of holiness and eternal life with God. We have been bought at a price and are to honor God as it tells us in 1 Cor 6:20.
If sin was a job, it has pretty harsh wages. I have had some pretty bad jobs and pretty good jobs. I have worked all kinds of warehousing jobs, customer service jobs, technical jobs and engineering jobs. All of them came with a wage on a scale of what you could make in that job.
But considering what sin pays, who would want to take a job there? I choose the “Gift of God” and I hope all of you will as well.
