Can I Come?

Can I Come?
by: Pastor David Wood

Matthew 14:25-33 NIV
Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear. But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”  “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.”  “Come,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?” And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”

This text we read takes place shortly after JC and the boys fed the 5000. Jesus had sent the disciples on ahead in a boat to cross the lake without Him while He dismissed the crowd and then went up the mountainside to pray.

When they first saw Jesus, they were afraid that He was a ghost. Jesus tells them to be courageous and not to be afraid. That is when Peter got the opportunity to do something amazing. He asked Jesus, if it were really Him, that he could come to Him. And Jesus said, “Come!”

At first, things went very well for Peter, then something happened. He took his eyes off of Jesus, instead looking at the waves being pushed all around him by the wind. Then, he began to sink and cried out for help. Jesus, reached out His hand and saved him.

I have hypothetically been there many times in my life. Moving in a direction I feel the Lord has said to come, only to take my eyes off the goal and fix them on my circumstances that are around me, instead of what He has asked me to do. Then down I went.

We all will have times when we step out and times of sinking. But that’s ok, because each time we try, we also learn and more, we grow. And then we try again.

We serve a Savior that says, “Come!” and a Savior that reaches out His hand to catch us when we get our eyes off Him and begin to sink. Jesus tells us to be courageous and not to be afraid. Something “to be” and something “not to be.” And like Shakespeare, that is the question.

Jesus, can I come?
