What’s in your hand?

What’s in your hand?
by: Pastor Ryan Scheibel

1 Samuel 18:10, “And it happened on the next day that the distressing spirit from God came upon Saul, and he prophesied inside the house. So David played music with his hand, as at other times; but there was a spear in Saul’s hand.”

David was full time on staff at King’s Saul’s palace. He was a private musician for Saul. He was like his personal stereo system. Whenever Saul was having troubled thoughts, he’d bring David in, and David would bring his little harp in. He was like a Jukebox, playing all the music that was needed for Saul to soothe his spirit.

Notice how David played music with his hand, but there was a spear in Saul’s hand. Notice the contrast between what’s in one guy’s hand versus the other guy’s hand. In one guy’s hand is a musical instrument to praise God and bring Him glory. In the other guy’s hand, is a spear. He had a weapon. In the hand of David was an instrument of worship and healing and in the hand of Saul was an instrument of war and hurting.

What’s in your hand? Some of us struggle with keeping spears in our hand as we’re always quick to throw a spear at others using harsh words to tearing others down. But God wants us to use our hands to bless others and bring God glory! There’s a harp in David’s hand. He’s a worshipper. There’s a spear in Saul’s hand. He’s a jealous ruler.
