An Insane Madman

An Insane Madman
by: Pastor Ryan Scheibel

1 Samuel 21:13-15, “So he changed his behavior before them, pretended madness in their hands, scratched on the doors of the gate, and let his saliva fall down on his beard. Then Achish said to his servants, ‘Look, you see the man is insane. Why have you brought him to me? Have I need of madmen, that you have brought this fellow to play the madman in my presence? Shall this fellow come into my house?’”

David panicked and he was afraid of the king of Gath, so he changed his behavior before them, pretending to be something he’s not. He pretended to be a madness as he used his hands to scratch on the doors and let saliva fall down. David changes his behavior from a regular normal guy to one who is a madman and he lied about being insane.

The question I have is why did David even go to Gath to the Philistine City where he killed Goliath? He probably thought it’s the last place Saul would ever go to look for him, but I think David was simply turning to the wrong source for help. David was running from Saul but here he turned to the world for help.

When we are afraid, do we act insane and turn to the world or are we going to turn to the Lord?

David would later write Psalm 121:1-2. “I look to the hills from where my help comes from my help comes from the Lord.”

This is a lesson how David learned the importance of turning to the Lord for help not the world. When we are in the flesh, we do silly things.
