Easy Button?

Easy Button?
by: Pastor David Wood
Mark 12:28-31 NKJV - Then one of the scribes came, and having heard them reasoning together, perceiving that He had answered them well, asked Him, “Which is the first commandment of all?” Jesus answered him, "The first of all the commandments is: 'Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.' This is the first commandment. And the second, like it, is this: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no other commandment greater than these."
I think we all like an "Easy" button. Something that makes life simpler and maybe speeds up results. This is the first thing that comes to mind when I read these verses. "Jesus, give us just the top two commandments!" As if we can handle even that! Ha.
We know that 10 commandments were meant to show us our dire need for a Savior. And yes, who these scribes were talking to was that Savior, though they probably didn't believe it.
So, back to this "Easy" button. Did Jesus give them that button? Well, let's look into that.
Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength and then love your neighbor as yourself. Easy peasy, mac and cheesy, right? Weeeeeeell...it is two instead of ten but there is a catch. (Oh no, not a catch!!) These two actually encapsulate all of the commandments. Let's look.
No other god's - covered. No idols - covered. Don't take the name of God in vain - covered. Keep the sabbath - covered. Honor your father and mother - covered. Do not murder - covered. Do not commit adultery - covered. Do not steal - covered. Do not bear false witness against a neighbor - covered. Do not covet - covered.
Jesus just did it better. He gave them an "I need a Savior" button.
