Jesus Your Stronghold

Jesus Your Stronghold
by: Pastor Ryan Scheibel
1 Samuel 24:21-22, “Therefore swear now to me by the Lord that you will not cut off my descendants after me, and that you will not destroy my name from my father’s house. So David swore to Saul. And Saul went home, but David and his men went up to the stronghold.”
David and Saul reconciled and it was beautiful. If they reconciled, why did Saul go home and David remained out in the strongholds? Why didn’t David go home? David knew that as much as Saul meant it in the moment, that it would take time to demonstrate if that repentance was real.
Saul’s behavior shouldn’t characterize our Christian life. Many times a person repents and claims to recognize sinful ways. A real repentance and a changed heart isn’t always demonstrated by the emotion of a moment or by the sincerity of a moment. It’s demonstrated by the ongoing direction of someone’s life.
Alan Redpath wrote, “What is the use of saying, ‘I have played the fool,’ if he goes on playing the fool?” What good are his tears and confession before David if he doesn’t act upon his remorse.
I love how David goes to the stronghold because it reminds us to go to our stronghold to Jesus.
Psalm 18:2, “The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; My God, my strength, in whom I will trust; My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.”
In life, we need to keep coming back to Jesus, keep running to the stronghold, keeping our eyes on Him in every situation and cry out to the Lord for help, to lead us, to guide us, and direct us.
