Not True Repentance

Not True Repentance
by: Pastor Ryan Scheibel

1 Samuel 24:16-19, “So it was, when David had finished speaking these words to Saul, that Saul said, ‘Is this your voice, my son David?’ And Saul lifted up his voice and wept. Then he said to David: ‘You are more righteous than I; for you have rewarded me with good, whereas I have rewarded you with evil. And you have shown this day how you have dealt well with me; for when the Lord delivered me into your hand, you did not kill me. For if a man finds his enemy, will he let him get away safely? Therefore may the Lord reward you with good for what you have done to me this day.’”

I believe Saul was weeping because he knew his heart wasn’t right and he was in the wrong. He tells David I showed you evil but you showed me good. Saul realizes David’s actions were righteous as David was doing good to his enemies and this is the exact same thing that Jesus wants us to do to overcome evil with good.

Romans 12:21, “Do not be overcome by evil but overcome evil with good.”

Saul was emotional but not repentant even though he was weeping. There were tears but he didn’t change because we’re going to turn a few pages and he’s gonna be right back to pursuing David. Sometimes people say I feel so bad that I did that to you and then they do it to you again tomorrow. That’s not real repentance, that’s not genuine, that’s insincere. Time will tell if people truly repent.
