A Bathroom Break

A Bathroom Break
by: Pastor Ryan Scheibel

1 Samuel 24:3, “So he came to the sheepfolds by the road, where there was a cave; and Saul went in to attend to his needs.” (David and his men were staying in the recesses of the cave.)

Saul was trying to find David with an army of 3000 men, but he’s got to go to the bathroom... That’s what it means when it says he had to attend to his needs!  The funny thing was that David and his men were hiding out in the recesses of the cave and outside of the cave were 3,000 troops with all their horses and equipment so it’s no wonder why Saul couldn’t tell that David and his men were back there trying to be as quiet as they could.

David was outnumbered 5 to 1. 3,000 to 600. David needed to make a decision and Saul was alone. You might look at this as David’s golden opportunity to take vengeance.
Jesus said in Matthew 5:43-45, “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy. But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you.”

David could have said, yep, he tried to take my life. I’m going to be taking his life. Vengeance comes naturally but forgiveness comes supernaturally. It’s very easy to see our opportunity to get even with somebody but it is best to leave it in God’s hands and forgive.
