Friendships

1 Samuel 18:2-4, “Saul took him that day, and would not let him go home to his father’s house anymore. Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul. And Jonathan took off the robe that was on him and gave it to David, with his armor, even to his sword and his bow and his belt.”

What exactly was this covenant? We are not told, but it seems that Jonathan, who is the prince of Israel next in line to be king, understood and acknowledged that David would be the next king of Israel. Jonathon presented his own sword, bow, and belt to David, which was a token of saying, David, you the man. I recognize God’s hand is with you, and I’m giving it to you. He supported David out of love. Jonathan had a very discerning spirit and was a godly guy.

It’s always a good thing to be in tune to the will of God. I want to be in God’s will. I desire to have that discerning spirit. Jonathan and David developed a close relationship as friends as they had a lot in common. They had the same Zeal and passion for God that really unified them. Do you have friends like that?
 
We’ll have close friendships when we are knit at the foot of the cross. When you have people that are like-minded and who are pursuing the Lord, chasing after him, and living for God, there’s something there that goes beyond family.

Hold on to those friendships and cultivate and invest in those who are strong believers.
