Is Pain Good?
by: Pastor Ryan Scheibel
James 1:2-4, “My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.”
We don’t like to admit this but pain can be very good for us. It matures and strengthens us.
When they first started manufacturing golf balls, the balls were smooth and polished because they thought the smoother the surface of the ball, the further it will travel. However, they discovered that if you dimple the surface, it will go further and create lift and less drag.
God knows that for us to go further in life, to do better, it can’t be all smooth sailing. There has to be some rough times. We need to hit bumps from time to time. Even though we don’t like it, it produces in us better character! Smooth seas don’t make skillful sailors.
Somebody once said that life is 20% what happens to us and 80% our reaction to what happens to us. Beethoven was deaf but he responded well to what life threw at him. Albert Einstein faced challenges in school but responded well to it. Michael Jordan was cut from his high school basketball team during his sophomore year. Walt Disney was fired from a newspaper job for not being creative enough. All of these people that were just mentioned had painful circumstances happen to them. Life hurt them but they responded well to it.
It’s not about what happens or how you start but how you react and finish! Ask Jesus to help you.
