1 Samuel 17:40, “Then he took his staff in his hand; and he chose for himself five smooth stones from the brook, and put them in a shepherd’s bag, in a pouch which he had, and his sling was in his hand. And he drew near to the Philistine.”

David was ready to fight with things he had fought with before. He had his shepherd’s staff and a sling made of two long cords with a pocket. You would take a rock and put it in the pouch and wave it above your head and that rock would reach speeds over 70 miles per hour.
David picked up five smooth stones because according to 2 Samuel 21:22, the Bible says Goliath had four sons, so this was great wisdom that David displayed picking up stones for Goliaths sons if they come after him for killing their dad.

I love how David got what he needed to fight off the enemy at the brook. When we go to the waters of God’s Word, we too, will find what we need to fight off the enemy.

John 4:14, “whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.”
Matthew 4:4, “But He answered and said, ‘It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’”
